Monstera Deliciosa

Monstera Deliciosa

The Monstera Deliciosa has many tasty nicknames such as the fruit salad plant and Swiss cheese plant, relating to the second part of its name ‘Deliciosa’. Commonly called the Swiss cheese plant because of the holes that evolve in the plant’s leaves as it grows. The amount of holes which creates the plants unique look and personality is caused by the environment that it is in, its said that the more sun equals the more holes.
These babies are indoor and outdoor plants, that were originally found in Mexico so they grow well in their habitat climate, which is shade and humidity. Like most people they enjoy temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.
When grown outdoors they have been known to produce edible fruit, probably how it got its name ‘Deliciosa’. The fruit looks and tastes like a mix between a pineapple and banana. Being long like the shape of a banana and having skin like a pineapple, so not only does it look delicious but also tastes good too! Back in the day the root of the plan was cooked and used to cure arthritis. Just a gift that just keeps on giving with its many uses and qualities. Just remember that although they may be tasty for people when eaten correctly, we shouldn’t let our fur babies eat them as they can be toxic to animals if consumed.
Monstera’s grow up and out, if outside they like to grow up trees because of the shade they provide and the heat from outside, making the plant thrive. Inside they are slow growing so if you don’t see any fast development, just know it is still happy and slowly getting there, taking its time to enjoy life (One day you will find peace about your Monstera happily growing away and you’ll look back to reminisce and find that your baby Mons has graduated to a grown Mons).
Care wise, they don’t like heaps of water, so it is suggested that you soak the plant and let the excess water drain out and then water it again once the top 2cm of soil is dry. Whatever you do, don’t let it sit in water because that will cause the roots of the plant to rot and then the leaves slowly die.
Fun Facts: Monstera leaves grow curled up and then slowly unravel and they can also be found in a rare variegated variety, however EEFM just stocks the vibrant green type.
ANOTHER Fun Fact: Monstera leaves look very delicious as a cut stem too - We stock small and large size cut stems.
