This month at East End Flower Market, we are celebrating pride month! The month of June is a time to uplift LGBTQIA voices, support LGBTQIA rights and celebrate culture. It is a time to reflect on how far we have come and recognise the progress that still needs to be made. The celebration is held in June to coincide with the gay liberation movement that started as a result of the stonewall uprising in 1969. Police raided the Stonewall Inn Gay club in Greenwich village Manhattan and tried to forcibly remove patrons. The club goers fought back and the raid sparked six days of violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement. This event was a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United states and around the world.
A year after the uprising the first pride parade was started by the ‘Mother of pride’ Brenda Howard; a bisexual rights activist, and has now been running for over 50 years. Brenda came up with the idea to host several events around the time of the parade and hence, pride month was born. Unfortunately, due to COVID 19, many events, parades and marches over the world have been cancelled. However, there are still small ways we as a society can show our support and love for the LGBTQIA community.
Here at East End Flower Market, we have created some Pride Everlasting Designs available for the month of June. These designs were made with the colours of the pride flag in mind which was created by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. The original 6 colours represent different meanings. Red is symbolic of life, orange is symbolic of spirit, yellow is sunshine, green is nature, blue represents harmony and purple is spirit.
East End Flower Market will continue to support and donate to LGBTQIA causes later in the year and we will be highlighting some of our favourite LGBTQIA icons soon! As always, it is only possible for us to continue to advocate for these causes with the continued support of our wonderful customers, so thank you!
