Here are a few handy tips to keeping your orchid happy and healthy;
Originally bred from wild orchids in the mountains of India and South East Asia, the ornamental plant represents luxury, beauty and strength and its easy to see why!!
Although they look super delicate this breed of orchid is not difficult to look after at all! Cymbidiums appreciate a protected position away from hot, strong sun, heavy winds and direct frost – The prefect environment should be warm, airy, bright and preferably off the ground. North facing verandas, patios and windows are excellent if they are covered.
A healthy well-grown orchid will produce flowers every year and a plant 10 years old can produce from between 10- 20 flowers.
Cymbidiums require watering all year around. If left to dry out for long periods it will survive but will not flower well in the next year or two. Check the soil, if the top is still moist you can leave watering for a day or so. As a guide use the following;
Summer; Two to three times pre week. Daily or twice daily in hot weather.
Autumn; Once to twice per week. Slightly more often if warm.
Winter; Once per week or two of under cover.
Spring; As for Autumn.
Water on the flowers can greatly shorten the flowers life, avoid leaving out in the rain and weather, or pouring water directly onto the blooms when watering. How ever you can mist around the plant to keep the air humid and tropical in warmer months.
So next time you are looking for something in between a bouquet and an indoor plant look no further than the Cymbidium Orchids. They are the perfect gift for any occasion.
