Plant Profile: Calathea

Scientific Name: Calathea spp.
Common Names: Prayer Plant (often confused with Maranta), Zebra Plant, Peacock Plant (varies by variety)
Native to: Tropical South America

Calatheas are beloved for their striking, patterned leaves — from bold stripes to intricate feather-like designs — that bring colour and texture to indoor spaces. Known as “living art,” they’re also nicknamed Prayer Plants because many varieties fold their leaves up at night, as if in prayer. While a little more particular than hardy houseplants, with the right care they flourish and become true statement pieces.

🌱 Care Instructions

  • Watering: Moderate to Frequent – Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow only the top layer to dry before watering again. Calatheas are sensitive to tap water — use filtered or rainwater if possible.

  • Sunlight: Low to Moderate – Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sun can fade or scorch the patterned leaves, while low light may slow growth.

  • Growth: Moderate – Steady growers that can reach 30–60 cm tall depending on the variety. Repot every 1–2 years to refresh soil.

Extra Tips

  • Loves humidity — perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, or grouped with other plants.

  • Fertilise every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser.

  • Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to keep them dust-free and vibrant.

  • Sensitive to drafts and temperature changes — keep in a stable environment above 16°C.

  • Non-toxic, making them a safe choice for pet-friendly households.
