Plant Profile: Fiddle Leaf Fig

Scientific Name: Ficus lyrata
Common Name: Fiddle Leaf Fig
Native to: Western Africa

The Fiddle Leaf Fig is one of the most popular statement houseplants, loved for its large, violin-shaped leaves and bold, upright growth. With its striking presence, it’s the perfect choice to transform a living room, office, or entryway into a lush, modern space. While it can be a little finicky, the reward is a tall, sculptural plant that makes a lasting impression.

🌱 Care Instructions

  • Watering: Moderate – Water when the top 5–7 cm of soil has dried out. Avoid overwatering and ensure the pot has excellent drainage, as root rot is a common issue.

  • Sunlight: Full to Moderate – Thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun. Too little light can cause leaf drop.

  • Growth: Quick – Fast-growing in the right conditions, reaching 2–3 metres indoors. Can be pruned to control height and encourage bushier growth.

Extra Tips

  • Rotate the plant regularly so it grows evenly towards the light.

  • Clean leaves with a damp cloth to keep them dust-free and glossy.

  • Fertilise every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

  • Sensitive to changes — try not to move it often, as it may drop leaves in protest.

  • Toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
