Plant Profile: Monstera

Scientific Name: Monstera spp.
Common Names: Swiss Cheese Plant, Split-Leaf Philodendron
Native to: Tropical rainforests of Central and South America

Monsteras are true icons of the indoor plant world, loved for their bold, glossy foliage and distinctive leaf fenestrations (holes and splits). With varieties ranging from the large-leafed Monstera deliciosa to the smaller, trailing Monstera adansonii, these plants add instant jungle vibes to any space. Easy to care for and fast-growing, Monsteras are a must-have for plant lovers.

🌱 Care Instructions

  • Watering: Moderate – Water when the top 5–7 cm of soil has dried out. Monsteras like consistent moisture but dislike soggy soil, so ensure good drainage.

  • Sunlight: Moderate – Thrives in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate partial shade, but growth will slow. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch leaves.

  • Growth: Quick – Monsteras are fast growers in the right conditions. Indoors they can reach 2–3 metres tall (deliciosa) or trail gracefully down shelves (adansonii).

Extra Tips

  • Provide a moss pole or trellis for climbing varieties to encourage larger, split leaves.

  • Wipe leaves regularly to keep them dust-free and healthy.

  • Fertilise every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

  • Easy to propagate from stem cuttings in water or soil.

  • Toxic to pets if ingested, so keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
