Plant Profile: Philodendron

Scientific Name: Philodendron spp.
Common Names: Heartleaf Philodendron, Tree Philodendron, Philodendron Xanadu (varies by variety)
Native to: Tropical regions of the Americas

Philodendrons are a diverse group of tropical plants, adored for their lush foliage, easy care, and ability to adapt to a wide range of indoor environments. With over 400 species, they come in many forms — from trailing varieties perfect for hanging baskets, to bold upright types like the Philodendron Selloum or Xanadu. Hardy and forgiving, Philodendrons are a favourite choice for beginners and collectors alike.

🌱 Care Instructions

  • Watering: Moderate – Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Philodendrons enjoy consistent moisture but should never sit in soggy soil.

  • Sunlight: Low to Moderate – Most Philodendrons thrive in bright, indirect light but will also tolerate lower-light conditions. Avoid harsh direct sun, which may burn their leaves.

  • Growth: Moderate to Quick – Many varieties grow steadily and can reach impressive sizes with the right care. Trailing types can be pruned or trained; upright types may grow up to 1–2 metres indoors.

Extra Tips

  • Use a well-draining potting mix with added organic matter.

  • Fertilise every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

  • Wipe leaves regularly to remove dust and help the plant photosynthesise efficiently.

  • Trailing varieties can be propagated easily from cuttings in water or soil.

  • Toxic if ingested — keep out of reach of pets and children.
