Plant Profile: Rubber Tree

Scientific Name: Ficus elastica
Native to: South and Southeast Asia

The Rubber Tree is a bold and versatile indoor plant, known for its thick, glossy leaves that bring a lush, tropical feel to any space. A hardy member of the fig family, it’s available in several varieties — from classic deep green to striking burgundy or variegated patterns. With the right care, a Rubber Tree can grow into an impressive indoor feature plant.

🌱 Care Instructions

  • Watering: Moderate – Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil has dried out. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. In summer, it will need more frequent watering; in winter, less.

  • Sunlight: Moderate to Full – Thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some gentle direct sun. Avoid harsh midday rays that can scorch its leaves.

  • Growth: Quick – Fast-growing in the right environment and can reach up to 2–3 metres indoors. Prune regularly to control height and shape.

Extra Tips

  • Wipe leaves regularly to remove dust and maintain their natural shine.

  • Prefers warm indoor temperatures (above 15°C) and stable conditions — avoid drafts and sudden changes.

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer.

  • Repot every 1–2 years to give roots room to expand.

  • Rubber Trees are toxic if ingested, so keep them away from pets and children.
