Plant Profile: Zanzibar Gem

Scientific Name: Zamioculcas zamiifolia
Common Name: ZZ Plant
Native to: Eastern Africa

The Zanzibar Gem, also known as the ZZ Plant, is one of the toughest and most low-maintenance houseplants you can own. With its glossy, dark-green leaves and upright growth habit, it adds elegance and style to any room. Famous for tolerating neglect, it’s the perfect plant for busy plant parents or low-light spaces.

🌱 Care Instructions

  • Watering: Light – Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as the rhizomes store water. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

  • Sunlight: Low to Moderate – Thrives in low-light conditions but grows best with bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Growth: Slow – A slow grower, especially in low light. Can reach 60–90 cm tall over time. Rarely needs repotting thanks to its hardy nature.

Extra Tips

  • Extremely drought tolerant — perfect for offices or homes where watering might be irregular.

  • Wipe leaves occasionally to keep their natural shine.

  • Fertilise lightly every 2–3 months during spring and summer.

  • While hardy, it is toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
