Plant Profile: Hellebores

Scientific Name: Helleborus spp.
Common Names: Winter Rose, Lenten Rose, Christmas Rose
Native to: Europe and Asia

Hellebores are elegant, cold-loving perennials prized for their long-lasting blooms that appear in late winter through early spring, when most other plants are still dormant. Their nodding, cup-shaped flowers come in shades of white, pink, plum, green, and even speckled patterns, adding charm and colour to shaded gardens and pots. Hardy and reliable, Hellebores are a favourite for cool-climate gardeners.

🌱 Care Instructions

  • Watering: Moderate – Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in warmer months, but reduce frequency in winter when growth slows.

  • Sunlight: Low to Moderate – Prefers partial to full shade, thriving under trees or in sheltered garden beds. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun.

  • Growth: Slow to Moderate – Hellebores establish slowly but reward patience with clumps that expand year after year. They typically grow 30–60 cm tall and wide.

Extra Tips

  • Plant in rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.

  • Mulch annually to retain moisture and protect shallow roots.

  • Remove old or damaged leaves in late winter before new growth appears.

  • Fertilise in early spring with a slow-release fertiliser to encourage flowering.

  • Hellebores are deer- and rabbit-resistant, making them great for low-maintenance gardens.

  • Note: While beautiful, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.
