Reflexed Roses

Why your roses look so open, and why that's a good thing!

If you’ve ever received a bouquet from East End Flower Market and noticed some of the roses looked extra open, sculptural, or “fluffy”, you may have spotted a reflexed rose.

At first glance, some people think these roses are wilting, fully bloomed, or past their prime — but they’re actually the opposite. Reflexing is an intentional floristry technique used to transform a fresh rose into something more artistic, dramatic, and textural.

So… What Is a Reflexed Rose?

Reflexing is when a florist carefully folds the outer petals of a rose backwards by hand. Instead of the petals sitting tightly cupped around the centre, they open outward to create a fuller, softer, more luxurious look.

Think of it like styling a rose rather than simply letting it naturally bloom.

The result?

A larger-looking rose

More texture and movement

A modern, editorial-style finish

A garden rose appearance from a standard rose variety

It’s a technique commonly used in weddings, luxury florals, and contemporary bouquet design.

Why Do Florists Reflex Roses?

We reflex roses because they create impact.

A reflexed rose photographs beautifully, fills space more dramatically, and gives arrangements that lush, romantic, “wow” factor people love.

It also helps:

Highlight the shape and colour of the petals

Add softness and dimension to bouquets

Create a more premium, designer-style arrangement

Blend beautifully with seasonal and garden-style flowers

You’ll often see reflexed roses in some of our favourite products at EEFM, including:

Are Reflexed Roses Still Fresh?

Yes — absolutely.

A reflexed rose is still a fresh rose. The petals have simply been styled into a more open shape.

Because the rose appears more open, some people assume it’s at the end of its life cycle, but reflexing is usually done while the rose is still fresh and structurally strong.

In fact, many roses used for reflexing are selected specifically because they have healthy, flexible petals that hold their shape beautifully.

Will Reflexed Roses Last as Long?

Generally, yes — although reflexed roses can sometimes feel more delicate because the petals are more exposed.

Like all fresh flowers, longevity depends on:

The rose variety

Temperature

Water quality

Placement in the home

General flower care

To help your flowers last their best:

Keep them in fresh water

Trim stems every few days

Avoid direct sun and heat

Keep away from fruit bowls and air conditioning vents

A Design Choice, Not a Fault

Reflexed roses are one of those little floristry details that can completely transform an arrangement.

They’re intentional.

They’re styled.

And they’re designed to make your flowers feel abundant, luxurious, and modern.

So if your roses arrive looking beautifully open and sculptural — don’t worry. Your florist did that on purpose. ♡
