Why Does Perfume Change Throughout the Day?

Ever noticed that a perfume smells different an hour after you spray it than it did the moment it landed on your skin? You’re not imagining it. That’s fragrance notes at work! Once you understand how they’re built, choosing (and wearing) a scent becomes so much easier.

Every fragrance is made up of layers that reveal themselves over time rather than all at once. Perfumers group these into three categories (top notes, heart notes and base notes), often called the scent’s ‘pyramid’.

Top notes: the first impression. These are what you smell in the first few minutes. They’re usually light and fresh: think citrus, light fruits or crisp herbs. They fade quickly (often within 15–30 minutes), and their job is simply to draw you in.

Heart notes: the main character. Once the top notes fade, the heart steps in. This is the true personality of the fragrance, usually florals (our favourite, naturally!), spices or richer fruits. Heart notes can last a few hours.

Base notes: the lasting impression. These deep, rich notes emerge last and linger longest, sometimes for the rest of the day. Think woods, musks, vanilla and amber. They’re what you (and everyone around you) will remember hours later.

A fragrance can smell completely different on a tester strip than on your skin, and different again three hours later. That’s why it’s worth reading a scent profile rather than judging purely on the first spray.
